Former Seminoles in the Majors: Week 2

With week 2 of Major League Baseball’s season in the books, it’s time for the weekly update of former Seminoles who are currently in the Majors.

Devon Travis (Second Baseman, Toronto Blue Jays)

Travis expanded upon his excellent first week in the Major Leagues, starting in all 7 of the Blue Jays games this week and earning a hit in every game in which he saw a plate appearance. On the week, he went 10-25 at the plate (.400) with 2 home runs, 6 RBIs, and 4 runs. On the season, Travis is batting .356 with 3 homers and 12 RBIs. If he continues at his current pace, Travis would finish this season with 37 home runs and 150 RBIs, a near-definite Rookie of the Year campaign. In Sunday’s loss to the Atlanta Braves, Travis left midway through his first at-bat with soreness in his ribs. After an x-ray, it was revealed that he has a rib contusion and he will be day-to-day as to when he may be back in the starting lineup.

Stephen Drew (Second Baseman, New York Yankees)

Drew, who struggled a bit in the first week of the season, batting .150 after last Sunday’s win over the Boston Red Sox, continued his batting average woes, going 3-16 (.188) this week. However, he continued his success hitting for power with 2 home runs in 6 games and 3 in the last 7. His big moment of the week was a grand slam in Monday’s 6-5 win over the Baltimore Orioles which proved to be the difference. Drew managed just 7 home runs last season in 85 games played and is nearly halfway there through just 10 games this season with 3 homers.

Shane Robinson (Right Fielder, Minnesota Twins)

Robinson appeared in 5 starts for the Twins this past week, including 3 starts, and made the most of it, going 6-12 (.500) on the week with 3 runs and 2 RBIs. Sunday’s 7-2 win over the Cleveland Indians was his most impressive performance of the week as he went 3-4 with 2 RBIs and a run. With his .500 week, Robinson improved his season batting average to .386 and will assuredly be in the running for more playing time if he can keep up his hot start.

Buster Posey (Catcher, San Francisco Giants)

Posey had a bit of a rough week, going 4-24 (.167) batting with 1 run and 2 RBIs. On the season, Posey is batting .229 with 2 home runs, both in the first week of the season, and 6 RBIs. He is currently on pace for 69 RBIs on the season which would be his lowest RBI total since 2010, when he had 67 in 108 games, an incomplete season. The Giants, who have lost 9 of their last 10, have started the season 4-10 and may very well need Posey’s bat to heat up if they want to turn their early season rough patch around.

Sean Gilmartin (Relief Pitcher, New York Mets)

After a wildly successful first week of the season which saw Gilmartin make 2 appearances and throw 2 1/3 innings of hitless baseball out of the Mets bullpen, Gilmartin came back down to Earth a bit in the second week. He made 2 more appearances in relief and in both, he went 1/3 of an inning and allowed 1 run on 1 hit each time. On the season, this makes his ERA 6.00 as he has allowed 2 runs in 3 total innings. Despite Gilmartin’s personal struggles, the Mets have been unstoppable, currently on a 8-game winning streak that has helped them open up a 1.5-game lead over the Atlanta Braves in the NL East.

Randy Choate (Relief Pitcher, St. Louis Cardinals)

Choate made 3 appearances in the second week of the season out of the Cardinals bullpen. In each game, he faced just 1 batter, going 2/3s of an inning overall and allowing no runs on one hit. After the week where he allowed no runs, he lowered his ERA for the young season to 13.50. So far this season, Choate has made 5 appearances and in each one, he has faced just one batter.
