Why, Florida? The FSU vs. UF rivalry decides not only who takes home the Governor’s Cup, but also the above-pictured gator head. Rivalries that don’t decide the possession of a trophy usually involve some other type of object. An axe. A jug. But a head?

It makes sense for the ‘Noles to play for their rivals head; I mean, it’s more than likely that if you have your opponent’s head, you’ve fared pretty well in battle. Which brings me back to my original question: why would Florida play for its own decapitated head? Has no one in Gainesville ever thought to suggest that this is just a silly prize, at least from the Gators’ standpoint?
Given the aforementioned aesthetic choices UF has made over the years, the fact that no one has shouldn’t come as any surprise.
