Florida State Baseball Swept by ND, Continues Rough Patch

For the first time this season, the #7-ranked Florida State Baseball team was swept on a weekend series as they lost the third and final game of their series at Notre Dame by a score of 2-1. The woes for the FSU bats continued in Sunday’s loss as the Seminoles managed 6 hits and had their chances to score more runs but could not take advantage.

Mike Compton, FSU’s starting pitcher for Sunday, made an unexpected start after missing his last 4 projected starts due to injury. In his return, Compton looked like he never missed any time at all, going 5 innings and allowing 2 runs on 4 hits with no walks given and 6 strikeouts. However, Compton’s issues came from the fact that all 4 hits he allowed were extra base hits. In the Notre Dame half of the fourth inning, Kyle Fiala and Cavan Biggio led off with back-to-back doubles to open up the scoring, making it 1-0 ND. In the very next inning, Zak Kutsulis hit a 1-out home run to make it a 2-0 Irish lead.

Outside of that, Florida State’s pitching was spectacular, as Compton threw 5 quality innings and the FSU bullpen threw 3 innings of no-hit baseball with Alec Byrd throwing 2 innings and Billy Strode striking out 2 batters in 1 inning of work. With the loss, Compton falls to 1-1 on the season.

Similarly to the first 2 games of the series, the Florida State bats struggled in the early innings with just 1 hit in the first 5 innings. In the sixth inning, the ‘Noles had a big chance to get back into the game as they loaded the bases with no outs off of a single, walk, and a bunt that John Sansone legged out for a single. DJ Stewart singled into right field, making it 2-1 ND with the bases loaded and still no outs. However, Quincy Nieporte grounded into a double play on the next play and Chris Marconcini popped out in foul territory to end the inning. After loading the bases with no outs, Florida State managed just 1 run, which is definitely the story of this weekend.

The last significant chance to level the game for the ‘Noles came in the ninth inning when FSU put batters on first and second with just 1 out. However, the opportunity quickly ended after a pair of strikeouts and the game was over. Over the series against Notre Dame, the Seminoles managed just 4 runs over the 3 games. Going back into the mid-week series against Florida Gulf Coast University, FSU has scored 4 runs in their last 43 innings, which is a downright abysmal statistic.

With the loss, Florida State falls to 26-12 (11-6 in ACC play). The Seminoles are next in action on Tuesday when they will host UF in the rubber match of their annual series and will follow that up with a weekend series in Dick Howser Stadium with the Pittsburgh Panthers.
