Lack of Runs Dooms Seminoles Baseball Against Notre Dame

The Florida State Seminoles Baseball team traveled to South Bend, Indiana this weekend for a series against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. However, at least for the first game of the series, FSU seemed to bring their ice cold bats with them to South Bend, managing just a pair of runs in the 5-2 loss to the Irish to open the weekend series.

The ‘Noles, who entered the game with no runs in their last 16 innings, ended their scoring drought and struck first on a Dylan Busby 2-run homer in the second inning, his 7th of the season and puts him at 35 runs batted in on the season which leads all Seminole batters. However, the game was leveled just one inning later in the third inning on a home run by Cavan Biggio, the son of MLB legend Craig Biggio.

The Irish broke the tie in the fourth inning with 3 consecutive singles, making it 3-2 Notre Dame. In the seventh inning, the Irish padded their lead with their final 2 runs off of a pair of walks, sac bunt, and a 2-out single which made it 5-2, the final score.

FSU did have plenty of chances late in the game to make a comeback but were unable to take advantage of the situations. The best chance came in the eighth inning when the Seminoles loaded the bases with a single and a pair of hit-by-pitches and just 1 out in the inning. However, Notre Dame closer Sean Guenther closed the door with a pair of strikeouts and the ‘Noles left the bases loaded. In the ninth, Florida State managed just 1 hit and went down without much of a fight, losing their series opener for the fourth time in five weekends.

Boomer Biegalski, starting pitcher for the Seminoles in the loss, did not have a dreadful outing by any means but it was one of his less impressive starts, going just 5 1/3 innings and allowing 3 runs on 5 hits and 5 walks, with 6 strikeouts. With the loss, Biegalski’s record falls to 2-3 and his ERA drops to 3.55.

After managing just 7 hits in Wednesday’s loss to FGCU, FSU had an even worse performance on Friday with just 5 total hits. No Seminole batter had more than 1 hit, only 1 of the 5 hits was an extra base hit, and they also struggled more with plate discipline, a strength of this Florida State team, as they drew just 2 walks and struck out 11 times.

The one silver lining for the ‘Noles was their defense. They committed no errors in a game for the first time in 6 games.

Florida State next plays on Saturday at 2:05 PM as they look to rebound against the Irish.
