Solid Week Helps FSU Baseball in Polls

In a week that saw the FSU baseball team win its neutral-site game against the University of Florida and 2 out of 3 on their weekend road trip against NC State, the Seminoles (25-8, 11-4) made a leap in many of the national polls, continuing to impress with their young talent.

In the D1Baseball.com poll, Florida State made a jump from #11 in last week’s ranking to #9 in this week’s. This marks the first appearance by the ‘Noles in the Top 10 of the D1Baseball.com poll, which has been the toughest on FSU this season, with the Seminoles spending the early weeks of the season in the lower half of their rankings, as well as two weeks in which they were unranked in their poll.

In the USA Today Baseball Coaches Poll, Florida State held steady at #8 for the 2nd straight week on the backs of their 3-1 week. The #8 ranking is the highest that the ‘Noles have reached in the USA Today poll this season, previously falling as low as #19 earlier this year.

In the Collegiate Baseball Poll, FSU rose a single spot, improving from #8 last week to #7 this week. The 7th spot in the poll is the highest that the ‘Noles have possessed in any poll all season long.

In the Baseball America Poll, the Seminoles made a leap similar to that of the other polls, moving up 2 spots from #10 to #8, the highest mark that they have reached in the Baseball America poll this season.

In all of the aforementioned polls, Florida State is the highest ranked team in the state of Florida, a first for this season in any poll. This is due in large part to the tough week that UF suffered, going 1-3 with a loss to FSU and a series loss to Missouri in which they lost 2 out of 3 games. With the losses, Florida tumbled from 3 to 10 in the D1Baseball Poll, from 5 to 10 in the USA Today Poll, from 4 to 10 in the Baseball America Poll, and most drastically, from 6 all the way down to 17 in the Collegiate Baseball Poll.

It would seem that the Seminoles are hitting their stride at the right time and should be in contention for a national seed in postseason play, given to the top 8 teams. Florida State has not lost a weekend series since traveling to UGA on the 2nd weekend of the season back in February. However, they also have not swept a season series since Boston College nearly a month ago. Although the series wins have helped the ‘Noles rise up the ranks, an undefeated week would help FSU make larger strides in the national polls and ACC standings. This week, Florida State will host FGCU in a pair of games on Tuesday and Wednesday before a weekend series on the road against a struggling Notre Dame team that has gone 6-9 so far this season in ACC play.
