FSU Rivals: The Tim Tebow Era in Sports Needs to End Now
By Jason Parker
Tim Tebow is back at it in the sports world trying to get back to being relevant – this time, in the world of professional baseball.
It was just over a year and a half ago that we all thought that our long national nightmare had come to an end – especially for those of us who have an allegiance to the Florida State Seminoles. When Tim Tebow was cut by the Philadelphia Eagles after the 2015 NFL preseason, we all took a deep breath and and smiled at the thought of his career being done and buried over at the SEC Network.
But nope, the national nightmare has continued with the fact that Tebow is still in the sports conversation. This time, after a robust .194 batting average with 20 strikeouts in 62 at bats during the Arizona Fall League last year and a spring training stint with the New York Mets that included walking to the wrong on deck circle and continuing to strike out, Tebow is spending his spring as a member of the team’s Single-A affiliate, the Columbia Fireflies
(Sidenote: Minor League Baseball team names might be some of the best things in sports…just Google them once in a while.)
Now, we’re stuck hearing about this five letter name for a while since the Mets don’t seem quite ready to give up on this experiment after Rev. Tim hit not one, but TWO homers in his first week with the team. Call him up to Citi Field now, everyone…he hit the ball off some of the lowest level pitching in the sport, but he’s ready for the big time!

I’m being sarcastic, but there are plenty of people who are willing to give Tim Tebow the benefit of the doubt for some reason. Is it because he comes across as a genuinely nice person who wants to use his popularity for something else? Maybe. But, and I say this with all due respect to the man who torched the Seminoles the three years he was a starter for the Florida Gators: it’s time for you to go away, Tim.
Don’t get me wrong…I do commend the effort and will be the first person to admit he has every right to continue his dreams as long as teams and ESPN are gullible enough to give him contacts and air time. That being said, it’s a joke that he gets every chance to prolong an athletic career that quite frankly should have ended when he couldn’t even stay on the New York Jets’ roster.
Yes, some of the hate against Tebow does come from him being a former Croc, but there has to come a time where we call out the truths – Tim Tebow got much more credit than he has deserved over his athletic career.
While he was a Heisman Trophy winner in 2007, he also was part of a four loss team. It wasn’t until he got weapons around him that the Gators won another national title – and yet, it was Tebow who was praised for it all.
The same goes for his time leading the Denver Broncos to the playoffs in 2011 – because having players on both sides of the ball including Demaryius Thomas, Von Miller, Champ Bailey, Elvis Dumervil and others had nothing to do with it during six of their eight wins that were by a combined 18 points. Nope, all the man who through for 1,729 yards and 12 touchdowns that year.
The truth is that whatever he does, there is a certain section of the sports world and people as a whole who are going to believe he can do no wrong. There are a variety of reasons why which we won’t get into here, but sometimes you need to look in the mirror and realize when it’s time to call it a career. When batting .231 in Single-A baseball is considered an accomplishment, that’s the sign.
