Ranking FSU Football’s Five Best Non-National Title Bowl Wins
By Jason Parker
No. 2 – 1996 Orange Bowl (FSU 31 Notre Dame 26)
In the middle of maybe the best college football dynasty era for one team in the history of the sport, the 1995 season was a “down” year for the Seminoles. FSU entered the final scheduled bowl game at the historic Orange Bowl stadium with a 9-2 record, having suffered their first ACC loss and were in danger of not having double digit wins.
The fears of a third loss were becoming more and more as Notre Dame held a 12 point lead with just under 10 minutes to go in the game. Quarterback Danny Kanell took control and found both E.G. Green and Andre Cooper for touchdowns (Cooper would have three on the game) and the defense got a late safety and the ‘Noles got their 10th win of the season.

While the Seminoles would play the Miami Hurricanes six more times inside the famed stadium (splitting the games with a 3-3 record), it would be the final time FSU would play their bowl game in the stadium. The Orange Bowl would move north to what was most recently called Sun Life Stadium for the 1996 season, only being played once more in Downtown Miami following the 1998 season.
