FSU Sports: Olympic Sports Week In Review
By Jason Parker
Let’s take a look at how FSU’s Olympic sport teams did this past week.
While much of the attention is paid to the major FSU sports, including football, basketball and baseball, there is plenty of other athletic competition going on right now on the Tallahassee campus and across the country involving the ‘Noles. Here’s a recap of how some of the Olympic sports fared this past week.
Beach Volleyball
The Lady ‘Noles came so close to bringing home a national championship for the school at this weekend’s inaugural NCAA Tournament. After beating Georgia State and Hawai’i on Friday (avenging their lost to the Rainbow Wahine in the regular season that was FSU’s only blemish), the Lady ‘Noles suffered a loss on Saturday against USC, sending them to the loser’s bracket where they would have to beat UCLA Sunday morning. After that win, it was time for a rematch with the Trojans, who got the best of FSU and swept the battle 3-0. Still, FSU finished with their best result in the short history of the program.
Softball
It was a .500 week for the Lady ‘Noles on the diamond, as they dropped their scheduled game against the rival Florida Gators before losing the completion of their game that begun last month in Gainesville, but was delayed by weather. After beating FAMU on Thursday, FSU dropped their first game of a three game set against ACC foe Louisville before taking the second two games to win the series. The Lady ‘Noles captured the conference regular season crown and will be the top seed in this weekend’s tournament, where they will open against eighth seeded Pittsburgh.
Men’s and Women’s Track and Field
The Seminoles sent members over to Jacksonville on Wednesday for the annual UNF Twilight meet before having the weekend off to prepare for the ACC Outdoor Championships, being held May 13th-15th in Tallahassee.
Men’s Tennis
FSU sat and waited for the news about this year’s NCAA Tournament, where they are all but assured of getting a bid at making a run for this year’s championship. The 21st ranked Seminoles will start off postseason play in Athens, Georgia where they will take on the Baylor Bears. A win will send them to the second round, where they will face either the host Georgia Bulldogs or the South Carolina State Bulldogs.

Men’s Golf
With FSU being ranked in the top 10 nationally for the entire season, it was a given that they would be playing for more in the month of May during the NCAA Tournament. That was confirmed when they were selected to play in the Kohler, Wisconsin regional as the second seed in the 13 team field, joined by the rival and third Florida Gators and top seeded Illinois. The event begins on Monday, May 16th.
Women’s Golf
It’s on to the next one for the Lady ‘Noles as they finished second in their regional this weekend, qualifying them for the NCAA Championships later this month in Eugene, Oregon. The finish was the highest ever for the program and the first time they have made it to the championships since 2010. FSU is one of 24 schools to qualify for the championship tournament, a field that includes rivals Florida and Miami as well as ACC foes Duke, North Carolina and Virginia.
