Jameis Winston’s Wonderlic Score Leaks

Tuesday night, Jameis Winston’s Wonderlic Test score was leaked and Winston scored a 27, silencing his critics who may have had questions or doubts of his intelligence.

The Wonderlic Cognitive Ability Test is an examination given annually to every prospective NFL player. It uses logic-based questions to test the intelligence of the prospects. An example question used on a previous Wonderlic is “Which of the numbers in this group represents the smallest amount? a) 0.3 b) 0.08 c) 1 d) 0.33”. However, that question is on the easier side of things with some questions challenging even the most intelligent people. There are 50 questions on the Wonderlic and participants are given 12 minutes to complete the test.

To put this Winston’s score in perspective, the average Wonderlic score for incoming NFL quarterbacks is 24. At 27, Winston received a better score than such NFL legends as Terry Bradshaw (15), Dan Marino (15), Jim Kelly (15), and Brett Favre (22). His score also puts him ahead of many current NFL quarterbacks including Cam Newton (21), Ben Roethlisberger (25), and former Florida Gator Tim Tebow (22).

Although a Wonderlic score does not determine the potential of a quarterback by itself, Winston is in interesting company with his score of 27. He is just narrowly behind a trio of current NFL quarterbacks who have all won Super Bowls. Peyton Manning, Russell Wilson, and Drew Brees all scored a 28 on the Wonderlic.

Although numerous players have exceeded their Wonderlic expectations (Frank Gore scored a 6 and has had a fairly successful career) and failed to meet their Wonderlic expectations (Ryan Leaf, arguably the biggest bust in NFL history, scored a 27), a poor Wonderlic score had the potential to hurt Winston’s draft stock so a perfectly respectable score of 27 should keep him right where he is in mock drafts and projections.
