FSU Sold Talk: Wally Jim Jordham and Kurt Unglaub

FSU Sod Talk was a wet one on Saturday afternoon as the three Leon County High School alumni (wide receiver Kurt Unglaub and quarterbacks Jimmy Jordan and Wally Woodham) spoke in front of masses of saturated Seminole faithful.

Per usual, the Sod Talk ceremony commenced with pleasantries as well as a brief history of the origins of the Sod Cemetery. Wally Woodham spoke first, tackling various subjects about his time at FSU, from what brought him to Florida State to his thoughts on Bobby Bowden, who coached at that time. Wally left the crowd with something to think about, as he pointed out those qualities that made Bobby Bowden such a great coach to play for, stating:

"“I think the thing with coach Bowden was that he was able to take discipline in but still had the personality that you could talk with him…a lot of us guys came up in high school where you just didn’t talk to the coach…you were scared of him. At FSU you respected coach Bowden, but you weren’t scared of him.”"

It is obvious that Bowden knew how to do something right when it came to talking up his quarterbacks, as the QB duo that was Wally Woodham and Jimmy Jordan compiled a record of 29-6 at Florida State from 1977 to 1979. During this streak, the tandem recorded three straight victories over rival Florida.

Given Jordan’s winning pedigree as a quarterback, the question about what Jordan thought of current Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston was posed. Jordan responded saying, “He makes throws that I cannot believe he makes. He’s a winner. I guarantee you that after the games he’s exhausted because he leaves it all out on the field.” This response roused the crowed, as some audible cheers were made at Jordan’s heartfelt evaluation of Winston.

Concluding the ceremony was former FSU wide receiver Kurt Unglaub. Unglaub was no stranger to success, as he played at the same time as the two-headed monster of Wally Jim Jordham that was behind center.

Among the topics talked about by Unglaub was that of why he decided to play for the hometown Seminoles. On this Unglaub stated something that he had never formerly told to the public, stating:

"“I had a couple of offers. I wanted to play as quick as I could play…I didn’t want to sit on the bench…Mike Shuman grabbed me one afternoon and said, “Let me show you something.” So he took me into the coaches’ locker room and said, “You can play tomorrow if you want to.”…I said absolutely. I credit Mike Shuamn behind my coming to Florida State. This is the first time publicly that I probably announced that.”"

Sod Talk finished shortly after Unglaub’s recollections, as fans were then able to get photos with the trio of FSU greats.

Seminole legend Charlie Ward will take part in this upcoming Saturday’s Sod Talk as the ‘Noles host rival Florida.
