Florida State football coaches received some good news on Friday when 3-star wide receiver Majay Thompson announced his commitment.
The coaching staff hopes to continue that momentum this weekend with three official visitors, including one at the last minute: Under-the-radar 3-star linebacker CJ Ohuabunwa.
Ohuabunwa is a recruit the Noles got on campus earlier this spring, but didn’t officially offer until last month. A 3-star composite linebacker whose first offer was from Indiana a year and a half ago. He’s already taken official visits to Louisville, Kansas, and Virginia Tech. Ohuabunwa wasn’t slated to take his official visit this weekend, but the coaching staff was able to get that done, and it would be a big win for Mike Norvell.
FSU has had the propensity to court players and get them on campus several times, only to see them take an official visit elsewhere and commit. Maybe Florida State can flip the tables for once?
Ohuabunwa ranks as the No. 883 player and No. 74 linebacker in the composite rankings. He’s from Norcross, Georgia, and had excellent production in his junior year. He chimed in with 124 tackles, eight tackles for a loss, two sacks, and four pass breakups. He also had a forced fumble, a safety, and an interception.
CJ Ohuabunwa took an FSU official visit at the last minute and it could pay off for Mike Norvell
He self-reports his size to be 6’2” and 215 pounds, which means he’s likely just over six feet and 200 pounds. That checks out because he moves well on his highlight tape. One of the biggest issues with Florida State linebacker play has been lapses in coverage and the inability to trigger downhill. Ohuabunwa looks good in both of those areas. It looks like he has a nose for the ball and takes good angles to cover lots of ground in pursuit.
Florida State has two linebacker commits in its 2027 class, and Ohuabunwa would probably fill the final need at that position in this recruiting cycle. Florida State linebacker coach Ernie Sims seems to have a type, and Ohuabunwa would fit right in.
There are no crystal ball predictions yet, but I’d have to wonder where Florida State sits in this recruitment. They offered him later than the other schools he took official visits to, but Tallahassee is closer to home than the others. If they really want him in the class, they need to avoid what happened with 3-star DL Jason Lewis and get a deal done before he leaves campus this weekend.
Florida State doesn't have many realistic targets remaining in its 2027 recruiting class, and the official visit season is nearly over. If they can strike while the iron is hot, it would look like they have some momentum if their other top targets, like Sam LeJeune and Ta'Shawn Poole commit to the good guys.
