If you listen to all of the Florida State subscription sites, three-star defensive lineman Jason Lewis was all Florida State after his official visit a couple of weeks ago. He left without committing, with an official visit to Syracuse on deck the following week.

The sense was that visit for a formality before he would ultimately commit to Florida State. All of the crystal ball predictions favored Florida State until they all switched to Syracuse about an hour before Lewis committed to Syracuse on Thursday evening:

Jason Lewis's recruitment is par for the course for the Florida State staff

Lewis is from Florida and grew up a Florida State fan, and maybe that’s what some folks put more stock in than they should have. However, Lewis said he went with his heart. That’s odd, considering Syracuse is the polar opposite of Florida and not known for producing NFL talent. However, Syracuse offered Lewis well before Florida State, and that could have played a part in the decision.

They may have valued Lewis more financially than Florida State as well. Nevertheless, it’s another player that the Florida State staff spent a lot of time and effort getting on campus multiple times this spring, only to allow them to visit somewhere else and see them commit there.

Lewis is a solid player, ranking No. 627 overall and No. 67 among defensive linemen nationally. A 3-star who will take a year or two before he contributes, and that would have been true if he had committed to Florida State.

Florida State has three defensive linemen committed in Anthony Cavallaro, Eric Vaulx Jr., and Jaxon Holly, and is trending for one of the top defensive linemen nationally, Sam LeJeune. Is the latter one of the reasons why the coaching staff may not have pushed as hard for a commitment?

I’m not too upset that Lewis chose Syracuse because he wasn’t going to help immediately. However, it’s more about Florida State’s recruiting process (or lack thereof). Did they want the young man or not? Why spend all that time getting him on campus and not close the deal after the official visit? Then they’ll spend a lot of time on someone they know is a long shot and not get them either. It’s like they can’t figure out that sweet spot on priority targets.

Lewis called Syracuse "home" on his social media account after committing. Syracuse was a dumpster fire on the field last year (even worse than FSU), so we'll see if he sticks it out if things go south for Fran Brown again in 2026. However, it's not like Florida State is in a great position to take advantage if that comes to fruition. They will be fighting for their life and death to get through the first two months with a winning record, too.

It's frustrating to be a Florida State fan nowadays, and most fans have checked out of recruiting anyway. This 2027 recruiting class will be small and not anywhere near the top ten once again. We can only hope they have success on the field in 2026 to take the pain away.
