Here’s a preview of FSU baseball and their next set of games during the 2019 season.

Just a few days ago, we took the time in our preview of the FSU baseball team to talk about how the Seminoles had bended in their past two weekend series but didn’t break. Well, that went out the door after this week’s games and now the Seminoles are in a little bit of a sticky situation entering the final two weekends of the season.

We’re not just talking about a set of results that have head coach Mike Martin worried entering the final stretch of scheduled games in his 40 season career with the Noles – we’re talking about a losing record in his last seven games that includes the team getting no hit in their midweek of games.

Now, FSU baseball gets back into action this weekend in the final scheduled series inside Dick Howser Stadium for Martin – a series that is starting to look more and more like one that could actually be the final time in four decades where the legendary coach is leading the Seminoles inside their home turf.

Here’s our preview of this weekend’s games between the Seminoles and their foes during this week of action.

The Last Time The ‘Noles Took The Field

After winning two out of three games in their last two weekend series, FSU baseball scheduled a shortened (seven innings each game) doubleheader against the Jacksonville Dolphins after getting the first game between the two teams postponed due to weather back at the start of the season.

In game one, the Seminoles used small ball and got a RBI each from Nico Baldor, Carter Smith and Mat Nelson as Antonio Velez and J.C. Flowers combined to pitch the 3-0 shutout – which was good for the Noles since they blew a late lead in game two and couldn’t finish the job as the Dolphins ended up winning the season series with a 3-2 victory.

One day later, not only did the Noles end up losing to the Stetson Hatters in the third game between the teams this season – but the Seminoles ended up being no hit in the game and struck out 13 times in the 1-0 loss to the only non-ACC team with a losing record they will play over the final month of the regular season.

Opponent Preview

This weekend, the Richmond Spiders are the final scheduled home opponent for the Seminoles during the 2019 season – and a welcomed throwback moment to a time when both teams were members of the old Metro Conference, which the Seminoles left to join the ACC.

At 25-19-1 on the season, Richmond comes in with wins in six of their last nine games that includes taking two out of three games last weekend against conference foe George Washington – their fourth straight Atlantic 10 Conference series win after being swept by Rhode Island on April 5-7.

Interesting Fact

For FSU baseball, getting a series win over the Spiders this weekend would be big for obvious reasons – getting wins to have a NCAA regional at home, bouncing back from this past week’s action and so on – but it would also be huge for an extremely traditional reason.

In the previous 20 meetings between Richmond and the Seminoles, the men from Tallahassee have never lost to the Spiders on the diamond – not even one time at all. 11 times, the Seminoles have scored more than 10 runs in a game while winning by just one run a total of two times.
