FSU football has its first million dollar assistant coach with offensive coordinator Kendal Briles. We discuss the fan reaction to the news.

FSU football was in need of a lot of things to help turn the anemic offense from 2018 into something for 2019.

So Willie Taggart went out and got arguably the best offensive coordinator in the country in Houston’s Kendal Briles.

The Noles will be paying him a base salary of $200,000 from FSU and $800,000 from Seminole Boosters.

FSU football paid the previous offensive coordinator Walt Bell $700,000 annually who was not anywhere near as proven compared to what Briles brings to the table.

Some fans are not happy with the contract but some think Briles could be worth it. Check out some of their thoughts below:

The details of the contract can be viewed here. Considering what FSU was paying Walt Bell I think they got a great deal with what they are paying Kendal Briles.

Briles was already making $800,000 at Houston, so a $200,000 increase isn’t much at all considering.

Let’s be honest, the Noles and Wilie Taggart were in no position to play hardball in negotiations with Briles. He easily could have stayed at Houston another year or two and possibly gotten a head coaching job somewhere.

However, Briles knew when Willie Taggart contacted him about the job that he’d have a lot of leverage. Taggart borrowed a lot of offensive concepts from Briles’ system and he knew the FSU offense was one of the worst in the country.

FSU couldn’t afford not to hire Kendal Briles and everything that came with him(which appears to be very little baggage in hindsight).

He’s not expected to be at FSU for a long period of time for those worried about no buyout if he leaves for the NFL or a head coaching job.

His job essentially is to get this offense back to respectable in year one and close to elite in year two. If either of those happens the Noles will be in good shape moving forward regardless of who the offensive coordinator is.

It also gives Willie Taggart a front row seat of continuing to learn the Briles’ system to continue implementing once Briles is gone.

dark. Next. Why Kendal Briles Is Worth The Risk For Willie Taggart and FSU

If he’s gone in two years, two million dollars would be well worth the price to pay to save Willie Taggart’s job.
