FSU Olympic Sports Recap: May 10th-16th
By Jason Parker
Let’s take a look at how FSU and their Olympic sport teams did this past week.
While much of the attention is paid to the major FSU sports, including football, basketball and baseball, there is plenty of other athletic competition going on right now on the Tallahassee campus and across the country involving the ‘Noles. Here’s a recap of how some of the Olympic sports fared this past week.
Softball
Yet again, you can call the Lady ‘Noles by just one word – champions. The fourth ranked garnet and gold brought home their fourth straight ACC Softball Tournament championship this weekend, outscoring their first two opponents (Virginia and Notre Dame) 22-0 before holding on in the title game to defeat North Carolina 4-3.
Florida State now moves on to the NCAA Tournament, where they are the No. 4 national seed and will play at home as long as they are in it through the regional and super regional rounds. The action gets underway this weekend in Tallahassee, where FSU will be joined by Georgia, Jacksonville State and Princeton.
Men’s and Women’s Track and Field
It was a weekend in Atlanta for both teams, taking part in the 2017 ACC Outdoor Championships. The men’s teams finished in third place behind Virginia Tech and Virginia, while the women’s team completed the weekend in second place behind Virginia Tech
Both squads will have the coming weekend off as they prepare for the NCAA East Regional preliminaries coming up on May 26th, hosted in Lexington, KY by the Kentucky Wildcats.

Men’s and Women’s Tennis
The men’s team for FSU started off NCAA Regional play on a good note as the 33rd ranked Noles defeated 36th ranked Arkansas 4-1 during the opening round in Fort Worth, TX. One day later, Florida State would fall to host and No. 6 ranked TCU by that same score, ending the season with a record of 18-12.
For the women’s team, it was pretty much the same result as they won the opener over Arizona State on Friday by a score of 4-2, only to fall the following day to NCAA Regional host Auburn by the same score – ending their season with a 17-12 record, the most wins in a season since 2009.
Men’s and Women’s Golf
The men’s team is in the middle of their NCAA Regional tournament on the other side of the country, playing as the fourth seed just outside of Seattle with other programs including USC, Michigan, Alabama, Washington State and Texas A&M among others through Wednesday.
The women’s team is preparing for this coming weekend’s NCAA Championships in Illinois after finishing third in the Columbus, OH regional – their second highest finish in program history. They will be joined by 23 other teams, including rivals Miami and Florida as well as Ohio State, Arizona State, Alabama and Duke among others starting Friday and running through next Wednesday.
