No. 9 FSU Baseball and No. 7 UL Baseball Top ACC Standings
Two noteworthy heavyweight battles in the ACC transpired over the weekend. The result of said games helped make clear exactly which teams are the top teams in the conference through a quarter of the season.
With the throes of winter nearly behind most areas of the country many northern colleges are finally able to enjoy the ability to play at their own home ballpark. This applies for teams like Notre Dame and No. 14 UVA.
Notre Dame saw its first home weekend series of the season transpire when it welcomed an imposing Louisville squad to Frank Eck Stadium. For the Fighting Irish faithful the result was to be desired, though. Featuring a game that saw the two clubs play for 18 innings, the No. 7 ‘Cards swept the Irish in three games that could have just as easily seen Notre Dame enjoy the sweep.

Friday and Saturday’s contest saw the Irish lose by an average of two runs. Specifically, Friday’s game saw a pitchers’ duel unfold, and the ‘Cards come away with the 2-0 victory. In what became a marathon of a game, the Cardinals outhit the Irish with 19 hits to Notre Dame’s seven. The final 6-4 series deciding result wouldn’t come until the 18th inning, though.
With the home series loss behind them the Irish fell flat offensively in game three. Notre Dame dropped game three by a score of 3-0. For Notre Dame, this was a series that had the Irish won they would have likely found themselves in the top 25. Instead, the Irish will be looking to regroup quickly as an exceptionally desperate UVA squad travels to Frank Eck Stadium this upcoming weekend.
No. 14 UVA? Desperate? Indeed so. The Wahoos were the preason favorite to win it all in the ACC this season.
Where are they now?
Virginia currently sits in last place in the Coastal division (see standings below) following its series with a Florida State team that didn’t even see then-ranked No. 7 UVA play competitive ball in Sunday’s rubber match between the two clubs. The ‘Noles cruised to a 13-1 victory after Saturday’s shootout in which No. 9 FSU enjoyed the 12-10 triumph.
One final noteworthy series that transpired over the weekend witnessed No. 24 UNC go on the road and take the series from Georgia Tech in Sunday’s rubber match by a score of 5-1. The series victory knotted up the Yellow Jackets and Tarheels ACC record at 5-4 apiece. With just five ACC victories, both squads are nipping on the Hurricanes heels. No. 16 Miami currently sits atop the Coastal with six ACC wins to just two losses.
