Wash, rinse, repeat for Mike Norvell's comment about the starting quarterback job

This looks like it could be lingering for a while.

Florida State football is finishing up its spring practices on Wednesday, and the most important position battle is not yet decided: The quarterback.

The Seminoles had former UCF and Boston College quarterback transfer Thomas Castellanos under center last year, and it didn't go how Florida State wanted it to. Castellanos made the offseason comments about Alabama, beat them, and then virtually disappeared in the back half of the year.

It has been hard for head coach Mike Norvell to find an answer at the quarterback position besides Jordan Travis. Let's face it, though, Travis was a generational talent that had his career cut short due to injury.

Who will be the Seminoles' starting quarterback for the 2026 season?

In terms of today's quarterbacks, Florida State redshirt senior Ashton Daniels and redshirt freshman Kevin Sperry are competing for the starting gigs. JUCO option Malachi Marshall could also enter the mix when he enrolls at Tallahassee in the summer.

Coach Norvell mentioned previously that he wasn't ready to name a starting quarterback, but liked what he was seeing from the signal-callers. Many fans thought that it was a foregone conclusion that the veteran Daniels would eventually be named the starter.

However, it was surprising to see Kevin Sperry continuing to battle. Norvell spoke to the media after Wednesday's spring practice and told the media that he still wasn't ready to name the starting signal-caller, but he liked what he was seeing.

He did mention that Daniels was showing growth in the vertical shots of the passing game this offseason, and Sperry has potential but needs to show consistency with his skill set. For the first time, Norvell spoke about Marshall, where he knows that the JUCO standout lacks overall reps coming in, but he told the talented player to come in and do the best that he can for the opportunity.

It is probably a smoke screen for Ashton Daniels to eventually be the starter, and he is using these comments for gamesmanship. However, it would be a welcoming sight to see Kevin Sperry and Malachi Marshall push the competition to the very end.
