Ranking the 3 biggest needs Mike Norvell must address in the 2027 recruiting class

Florida State's recruiting class for the 2027 cycle has plenty of needs.
Vero Beach quarterback Wonderful “Champ” Monds IV, a four-star recruit, announces his college decision to attend University of Notre Dame live on the Pat McAfee Show on ESPN, May 1, 2026, at Vero Beach High School along surrounded by family members, teammates and coach Lenny Jankowski. Monds is rated the No. 2 quarterback in Florida and the No. 22 overall recruit in the state on the USA TODAY Florida Network Top 100.

Florida State needs to bolster its 2027 recruiting class because it isn't even ranked in the top-40, according to 247Sports Composite rankings. The Seminoles only have six commitments to their fold, and it could get worse before it's better with the Mekhi Williams situation.

The summer official visits cannot come quickly enough for Florida State, as they hope to generate momentum for a program that is starving for some type of success. Head coach Mike Norvell and company have to prove the doubters wrong, as the Seminoles have not secured a top-ten recruiting class during his time in Tallahassee.

Things can change in an instant. Maybe Florida State can lure in a prospect, and there will be a flurry of them behind the one that they get. Who knows? What I do know is that the Seminoles still have needs that they must address in the 2027 recruiting class.

Here are my top three biggest needs by position in this cycle for the Seminoles.

1. Offensive tackle

Assistant coach Herb Hand did a solid job with the Florida State offensive line last year, but the Seminoles had to rely solely on transfers at the position. They might have to do the same this year, especially at offensive tackle with Auburn's Xavier Chaplin and Bowling Green's Nate Pabst. They need to develop more homegrown tackles to ensure that they have multi-year starters. The problem is that Florida State does not have many offensive tackle prospects that it is going after in the cycle.

2. Defensive end

Position coach Nick Williams seems to be a young, energetic individual who values the art of high school recruiting. Williams hasn't been here long, and he has already gotten the commitment of four-star Anthony Cavallaro. Good teams have dominant pass rushers who can take over games, and the Seminoles have to ensure that it has that for their 2027 class.

3. Quarterback

This is one of the biggest elephants in the room, with the Seminoles not having a quarterback in the class yet. Four-star Wonderful "Champ" Monds IV committing to Notre Dame, after one visit, was a spit in the face to the coaching staff. Plus, to make matters worse, three-star Logan Flaherty has a crystal ball prediction in favor of Rutgers from Noles247's Zach Blostein. A Kevin Sperry, Malachi Marshall, and Jaden O'Neal battle in 2027 is cool and all, but the staff needs to get as much talent as they possibly can.
