Mike Norvell started his first post-practice press conference of the spring with an injury report and the announcement of Jaden O'Neal's season-ending injury continues the nightmare FSU fans have had over the past decade.
O'Neal, a four-star freshman quarterback, already came in with tempered expectations, but the hope was that he could at least show something that fans could point to as a reason for brighter days ahead. Instead, this injury puts him behind the eight-ball and leads Seminole fans into believing that it's another wasted recruit at the most important position on the field.

Sanders is the only new addition to that list, he is expected back for the fall, Brooks will be mid-season, and O'Neal will miss the entirety of 2026, according to Norvell.… pic.twitter.com/Oq9z79N7Oz
"Jaden O'Neal will actually miss this upcoming fall. It's something that he came in with, and we were able to start the process for his rehabilitation," Norvell said. "He's done a really nice job of getting into the quarterback room and starting to learn."
Jaden O'Neal injury will force freshman QB to miss the 2026 season
An incoming freshman quarterback not playing isn't a big deal. With Ashton Daniels and Kevin Sperry firmly established as the top two arms, no fan had to think O'Neal would see a snap unless the Central Arkansas and New Mexico State games got so out of hand that the practice squad kids started to get rotated in. But quarterback is a position that Norvell has failed at recruiting repeatedly, so it's understandable that FSU fans had immediate flashbacks upon hearing this announcement.
This is what happens when Chubba Purdy, A.J. Duffy, Luke Kromenhoek and Brock Glenn have all come through Tallahassee with the expectation that they would be the quarterback of the future and all left Tallahassee having failed to assume that role and, in the cases of Purdy, Duffy and Kromenhoek, have failed to find footing anywhere else, questioning what Norvell and the FSU staff saw in these prospect in the first place.
O'Neal didn't come in with the expectations of Duffy, Kromenhoek or even Glenn, so it's much easier to write him off immediately. But that doesn't make today's announcement any less frustrating for FSU fans that have been waiting for the next big-time quarterback.
