Florida State coaches taking a transfer portal quarterback for the third consecutive year was something they needed to do with Brock Glenn still on the roster.

With Brock Glenn announcing his plans to enter the transfer portal, FSU coaches have no choice but to venture into the QB transfer portal market for the third consecutive year.

FSU has one scholarship quarterback on the roster, freshman Kevin Sperry. He appeared in three games this season and attempted 17 passes. They have a walk-on, Michael Grant, and a 2026 four-star signee, Jaden O’Neal, en route to Tallahassee either this spring or summer.

Some FSU fans are quick to say Florida State should ride with Kevin Sperry as the starter, but there’s no way FSU can go into the 2026 season with only two scholarship quarterbacks and less than 20 pass attempts in experience on the roster.

Sperry needs more time to develop, and appearing in spot duty during games in 2026 would prepare him for starting duties in 2027. It would also give Jaden O’Neal the opportunity to develop while redshirting in 2026.

More importantly, if FSU wants to win games, it’ll need to get someone with proven production and experience who can lead. Some will point out that FSU hasn’t evaluated well in the transfer portal market in the past two years. That’s a fair point, but that doesn’t mean they should stop trying to get it right when they clearly need a QB.

Nobody is telling Miami they need to stop using the transfer portal for quarterbacks to develop the high schoolers they have. Whether they can afford a top-flight guy or not is another question. They haven’t been willing to go that route, and it's cost them the past two years. The early evidence points to them going the cheap route again. We’ll see how it shakes out, but they’ll be portaling again.
