If you’re a frequent reader of this site, you know I believe FSU needs another transfer quarterback for the 2026 season. They need the experience, depth, which gives them the best shot to win games, while allowing Kevin Sperry another year to develop.
Several high-profile quarterbacks announced plans to enter the transfer portal when it opens on January 2nd, and there could be more who announce over the next couple of weeks. Sam Leavitt, Brendan Sorsby, DJ Lagway, and Aidan Chiles are some notable names.
One name that’s being thrown around FSU circles is Old Dominion’s Colton Joseph. He’s a two-year starter for the Monarchs and would fit the dual-threat system Gus Malzahn likes to use. I haven’t watched much of his film, but his stats reflect someone similar to Thomas Castellanos, albeit against weaker competition.
That’s a major red flag for me. Joseph hasn’t completed 60 percent of his passes in either season. He’s mobile, as was Castellanos, and he’s much bigger than the latter, so that’s a plus.
However, it was the struggles of Castellanos in the red zone that limited the production of the FSU offense in 2025. He turned it over a lot, and Joseph isn’t exactly a safe bet at avoiding turnovers. He had more interceptions than Castellanos on fewer passing attempts this year.
Is it possible for Joseph to make a massive leap with two years of experience? I suppose, but he’d also be making a major leap in the level of competition.
If FSU plans to go the transfer portal route, they need to get a guy who can make a major impact. A player like Sorsby could be a game-changer for the Noles. If they settle on someone like Joseph, it feels like history repeating.
