Florida State's 2027 recruiting class recently received a tremendous update that consisted of four-star wide receiver target Sean Green choosing the Seminoles over the Georgia Bulldogs. This was a massive get because Georgia has been such a dominant program as of late, and Florida State went into their home state and grabbed him away from them.
This allowed the Seminoles to grab their first pass catcher of the cycle for three-star quarterback commit Logan Flaherty. The signal-caller mentioned on social media that the class wasn't finished yet, and more exciting news is on the way.
Unfortunately, the wise person once said that it could get ugly before it gets pretty, and that holds to Wednesday afternoon for Florida State, as four-star linebacker Gregory Batson decommitted from the Seminoles.
Batson was thought to potentially shut down his recruitment with Florida State and not take his official visit with Mississippi State. Still, it turned into a nightmare scenario for the Seminoles.
With that said, I don't believe that it is all bad for the Seminoles. They understand that they cannot keep everyone happy. Batson is a solid low four-star prospect and is rated as the 30th-best linebacker in the country, according to the 2027 247Sports Composite.
This isn't a can't-miss talent, even though I am a fan of his skill set. Batson had 55 tackles last season as a junior, and he is still growing and developing as a prospect. Florida State flipped Jernard Albright from South Carolina and has a ton of the same traits as Batson.
Florida State's front office is doing a tremendous job of evaluating what they can afford instead of star-gazing for talent
This isn't a time to diminish Batson's potential just because he decommitted from Florida State, but it is a reminder that the linebacker position isn't as important as the defensive line, for example.
It is also important to note that assistant coach Ernie Sims landed former four-star and top-150 prospect Izayia Williams from the 2026 cycle, whom the coaching staff is very high on. Plus, the fan base cannot forget about Daylen Green, Karon Maycock, Noah LaVallee, and Chris Thomas, whom they like in the room.
It doesn't have to be a loaded class of linebackers. The Seminoles are starting to realize what they can and cannot try to go after. Obviously, those four and five-star prospects who are homegrown in the nearby area or legacy prospects should be pursued, but if there is a high level of resources that need to be obtained for the recruit to be interested in Florida State, it is smart to cut ties and move to more realistic targets.
It is all about expanding the high school recruiting board. I have been saying it for years, where there were times when Florida State overrelied on the transfer portal for a position like offensive line, where they could grab a couple of high-three- and low-four-star prospects that they could groom.
However, the reality is that Florida State goes after Plan A and Plan B, and if it doesn't work, they enter the transfer portal sweepstakes to put a band-aid over a problem temporarily. This isn't to say that the coaching staff needs to fill their recruiting class with "three-star prospects with heart", but I like that this front office is evaluating everything before wasting resources on someone who is teetering elsewhere.
