Florida State’s 2027 recruiting class national ranking was nothing fans cared to brag about going into the official visit season a couple of weeks ago.

Their national ranking hovered in the high 50s, with only seven commits, and their highest-ranked player (from in-state Florida) decommitted and committed to Wisconsin of all places.

It was important for Florida State coaches to make up ground, as most top-ranked programs had 15 or more commitments in their 2027 recruiting class. Florida State seized the opportunity, securing three commitments from players who took official visits last week. Jernard Albright (four-star LB), Jayden Miles (four-star RB), and Sean Green (four-star WR) helped establish some momentum in the class, getting the Noles up to ten commitments total as they go into the next two weekends with 19 players expected to take official visits.

Also, three-star defensive lineman Jason Lewis indicated the Seminoles are his leader, and most expect him to commit to the good guys over the next few weeks. Florida State ranks No. 48 nationally, with the opportunity to realistically add four or five more commits from players expected to visit over the next few weeks.

Florida State seems to be taking the smart approach, targeting players they have a realistic chance to land instead of spending resources on guys they have no shot with. Here’s the crazy part: Florida State could jump from No. 48 to around the top 20 if it were to land four or five more targets they expect to have on campus.

If they landed Ta’Shawn Poole, Sam LeJeune, Jaxon Holly, and Jason Lewis today, they’d move into the No. 21 spot nationally, with only 14 commitments.

Florida State recruiting has a chance to improve its national ranking big time over the next couple of weeks

Listen, I’m not under any delusion and expect Florida State to finish with a top 10 class or anything. A top 20 class isn’t the standard at Florida State, though that seems to be the high school recruiting ceiling for Mike Norvell. However, No. 21 is much better than No. 48, and those four players would fill some real needs on the roster. The average per-player ranking is 87.90, and that would see a nice bump with those four players, putting FSU just outside an average blue-chip ranking per player.

For what it’s worth, there are several schools ranked higher than Florida State based on quantity instead of quality. For instance, Minnesota has a top-15 class, but the average per-player ranking is lower than FSU's.

It’ll be interesting to see how the next couple of weeks go for the coaching staff. They are fighting an uphill battle after going 7-17 the past two years, and the uncertainty of Mike Norvell’s future in Tallahassee. No question, opposing schools are using those two items to negatively recruit against Florida State.

FSU also doesn’t seem to have the same resources being poured into its program, and the first few games of the season will largely dictate the future. If FSU gets embarrassed against SMU and Alabama in back-to-back weeks? It won’t take long for the fan base to turn toxic once again on Mike Norvell.
