Florida State football recruiting needs some momentum in the worst way, and losing its highest-ranked commit, four-star defensive back Mekhi Williams, last week didn’t help their cause. Williams decommitted shortly after taking an official visit to Wisconsin. Yes, Wisconsin. In hindsight, Williams's leaving the class might have been a blessing in disguise.

He had his new commitment ceremony on Wednesday at his high school, which streamed on 247Sports. Williams chose Wisconsin over LSU and Nebraska as expected, but decided to play some games during the ceremony:

This wasn't a good look for Williams. As they say, true colors can't hide for long.

I’ve never been a fan of the fake-out tossing the hat thing, but the way Williams does it is in bad taste and disrespectful. Also doing all that, choosing Wisconsin, a school that went 4-8 last year with a head coach who’s on the hot seat, is certainly a choice. The adults in the room are right to be happy for him, but enabling this behavior is another red flag.

What happens if Wisconsin has a terrible start to the season and Luke Fickell gets fired? Do you think Nebraska and LSU are gonna be picking up the phone? I’d doubt it. If I were Florida State, I definitely wouldn’t.

Florida State has had enough players in recent years to display the look at me, I need attention red flags. They’ve been trying to get those players out of the program because they almost never pan out and are not worth the headache. The fact that Williams is choosing to leave Florida for a school like Wisconsin tells me all I need to know. In the age of the unlimited transfer portal, I would wager he won’t spend more than two years at Wisconsin.

I know Florida State fans were not happy he decommitted, but defensive backs are not the most important need anyway. Florida State got a commitment from a defensive lineman shortly before Williams decommitted, and I wrote that if I had to pick between the two, I’d take the defensive lineman all day because defensive backs come a dime a dozen in Florida and Georgia.

Good luck to the kid, but keep that type of stuff away from my program.
