Florida State football recruiting can’t have nice things, apparently. FSU got some good news early Sunday morning when three-star defensive lineman Eric Vaulx Jr. committed to the Noles over two other SEC schools.
It was a major win for the FSU coaching staff, poaching a Mississippi kid (if he signs). However, the good news on the recruiting trail was short-lived as Florida State’s highest-ranked commit, Mekhi Williams, announced his de-commitment from FSU shortly after taking an official visit to Wisconsin:

Florida State recruiting seems to take one step forward and two back every time.
Think about it. Florida State probably just lost an in-state defensive back to a B1G school that has no history of producing great defensive backs. The crazy part is, this is not the first recruit Florida State has lost to Wisconsin recently. The other part is that Wisconsin’s Luke Fickell is probably in just as much of a hot seat as Mike Norvell.
Williams had been flirting with other schools for some time after committing to Florida State a long time ago. Here’s the bright side. If I had to pick a position of more importance to Florida State, it would be in the trenches, because defensive backs can be found nearly anywhere.
The loss drops Florida State’s recruiting class ranking to No. 47 nationally with only seven commits. The other side of the coin is that Florida State may have known Williams was planning to decommit, so they pushed hard to secure Vaulx Jr.'s commitment to offset the news somewhat.
Either way, it gives the perception that Florida State can’t gain any positive momentum on the recruiting trail, especially losing their longest standing commit to a place like Wisconsin. I could see if it were Ohio State or Michigan, but Wisconsin? We’ll see how the recruiting class starts to take shape, especially with the official visitors scheduled to be in Tallahassee next weekend.
Mike Norvell and the coaching staff need to find a way to gain and sustain some momentum before the season starts, but that will be difficult considering the perception of the program and Mike Norvell’s future. It’s another byproduct of keeping Norvell.
