Florida State baseball adds powerful bat from JUCO ranks with Coy Clements commitment

Florida State gets the power bat that it has been looking for this offseason.

There was some concern about the Seminoles' offense last season after superstar Myles Bailey suffered his season-ending injury in the middle of the year. Bailey led the team with 13 home runs when the year ended, which was not a good thing since Florida State showed absolutely no threat of making opposing pitchers afraid.

Florida State baseball has major holes to fill on its roster and needs to add some major offensive production after last season. A couple of years ago, Link Jarrett went into the JUCO ranks and took catcher Marco Dinges, who proved to be a major addition and future MLB Draft pick

Link Jarrett is hoping to replicate that effort with the latest addition from the JUCO ranks. Pearl River Community College catcher Coy Clements announced his commitment to Florida State on Saturday morning:

Clements originally committed to Houston but decommitted earlier this month after they made a coaching change. Clements committed to Southern Miss out of high school and redshirted before transferring to Pearl River CC. He shattered several records there and was the Conference Player of the Year, and was a major reason Pearl River CC won the JUCO DII National Championship. He also earned First-Team All-American honors.

Coy Clements brings a power bat that Florida State baseball desperately needs in 2027

Notice the power to straightaway centerfield? That gives shades of Marco Dinges, and like Dinges, Clements isn’t going to get cheated on his swings at the plate. Obviously, there will be a jump in the level of competition, but it’s not like he’s playing absolute scrubs since they won a JUCO national title.

One of the more impressive notes is that Clements walked 20 more times than he struck out and had a .532 on-base percentage. He averaged scoring a run per game and had 71 RBI. I have no idea how he is defensively, but his bat offsets any glaring defensive flaws. Clements had a .995 fielding percentage and threw out 26.4 percent of would-be base stealers.

I like his approach at the plate. He's quiet without a ton of movement and drives the ball to all fields. Clements is what you want your college baseball players to look like in today's game. He's 6'4" and 220 pounds. He will be draft-eligible after the 2027 season, but if he gives FSU anything close to what he gave Pearl River CC? Florida State would take that in a heartbeat.

Florida State has added three players over the past week, and all three fit exactly what Link Jarrett needs to bring to Tallahassee to right the ship. They still have a ton of holes to fill on the roster, but these first few additions give me confidence Link Jarrett is trying his best to bring the right pieces to Florida State, especially if they don't have the same resources as some of these SEC programs.

There are good baseball players at every level. Just look at what West Virginia is doing in the College World Series. Stay tuned to Chopchat for more analysis of the incoming additions.
