Florida State baseball added its first transfer portal commitment on Thursday in local FAMU product Jackson McKenzie. He’ll fill a big offensive need, and FSU moved to fill another major area of need on Thursday with the commitment of UConn’s starting pitcher Cayden Suchy.
The McKenzie addition looks great on paper, but the Suchy addition is a major addition for Link Jarrett and Micah Posey. I’m not sure where he’ll fit in the rotation, but he’ll be a weekend starter for the Noles next year. I suppose who else they bring in could ultimately determine where he slots in the rotation.
Breaking: UCONN LHP Cayden Suchy has committed to FSU. The sophomore was this years BIG East Pitcher of the Year posting a 2.82 ERA with a 105/23 K/BB ratio in 89.0 IP. Elite top of the rotation get for the Seminoles. pic.twitter.com/GqzEqkUfyl

A remote athlete update from @ph3performance
Tread Athlete @CaydenSuchy came to us with a solid foundation, reaching into the upper 80s to low 90’s. However, Cayden wanted to find better consistency from start to start (velo… pic.twitter.com/t4Eix3Gavo
Cayden Suchy will be a big-time impact player for the Florida State Seminoles
Suchy will immediately draw a comparison to FSU’s Trey Beard because they are both left-handed with an elite changeup. His fastball probably ticks up a bit more than Beard's, reaching low to mid-90s consistently. He also has a nice breaking ball, but doesn’t come straight over the top with his delivery.
His stats are super impressive. He went six or more innings in over 65 percent of his starts last year. The St. John’s team that beat Florida State twice in the Tallahassee Regional? He went 7.1 innings, allowing two earned runs, three walks, and 10 strikeouts. The strikeout-to-walk ratio is something that is encouraging to see on the stat sheet.
Suchy had nine or more strikeouts in seven of his 15 starts. His 23 walks allowed in 82.1 innings is what winning pitchers do, and is on par with where Wes Mendes was this past year. Granted, Mendes consistently faced better competition in the ACC, but it’s still an impressive stat.
Suchy performed well against Power Four teams like Kansas State and Arizona. The work Florida State pitching coach Micah Posey did with Jamie Arnold, Wes Mendes, Bryson Moore, and Trey Beard has paid dividends. We saw Beard develop quite well over the season after transferring from FAU. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Suchy do the same thing.
He saw tremendous growth between his freshman and sophomore seasons. He went from pitching 30 innings and overcoming an elbow injury in 2025 to throwing 82.1 innings this past year.
This is a great sign for Florida State fans. These two additions look like Florida State will look to contend among the best teams in 2027, on paper at least. We saw some transfer portal players fail to live up to expectations in 2026. However, both players were among the top 10 players available in the transfer portal.
Florida State still has a ton of holes remaining on its roster. I'm sure we'll start to see more acquisitions now that most of the teams in the postseason have been eliminated. FSU needs more starting pitching and more power bats in a big way. I think the coaching staff should prioritize a Friday night option that the coaching staff feels comfortable with to seal the deal in Game 1 of any series.
