WR Deuce Spann

“The Deuce” was loose on Saturday night versus Duke.

The Seminoles were reeling after quarterback Jordan Travis threw an interception into tight coverage, which was returned for a touchdown to give the Blue Devils a 17-7 lead with 13:04 left in the second quarter.

The sold-out Doak Campbell Stadium immediately became quiet. You could hear a pen drop in the stadium as fans felt the possibility of an undefeated record coming to an end.

In the words of the great Lee Corso: “Not so fast!”

Duke kickoff specialist Charlie Ham decided to kick the football to redshirt junior wide receiver Deuce Spann. That decision proved to be costly as the former Illinois transfer turned on the jets in the open field where he returned the kickoff for a 99-yard touchdown to cut the lead to 17-14.

This marks the second kickoff return of the Mike Norvell era (other was Trey Benson against Boston College in 2022).

Spann has always been a player that Seminole fans were excited about the possibility of being on kickoff, considering that he has blazing speed. However, he has not put everything together in terms of development. This could be the exact confidence booster that he needed to be involved within the game plan.
