FSU football: Where does Jammie Robinson rank among great safeties?
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU football has always been in the “DBU” conversation with the amount of All-Conference, and NFL Draft picks the program has produced in a short amount of time.
The number of great FSU defensive backs has waned over recent years, but FSU has still produced some great ones like Lamarcus Joyner, Jalen Ramsey, and Derwin James, who have gone on to have great NFL careers.
Joyner had a great FSU career but also gets credit for helping FSU get back to elite status as a top recruit. That’s similar to a category that I place recent FSU safety Jammie Robinson. Robinson transferred to the Noles from South Carolina, finishing his two-year FSU career with an outstanding performance in FSU’s win over Oklahoma in the Cheez-It Bowl.
Robinson declared for the NFL Draft on New Year’s Eve and began to ponder where he fits among great FSU safeties. Robinson won’t be a first or second-round draft pick, but when we look at what he accomplished in his two years in Tallahassee, it’s damn impressive.
Robinson led the team in tackles in both seasons and made All-ACC First Team twice. I know Joyner didn’t play safety all the time at FSU, but Robinson only had 14 fewer tackles.
He has more tackles for a loss, three fewer interceptions, and two fewer passes defended in two fewer seasons. Joyner was All-ACC First Team twice, All-ACC second team once, and a consensus All-American.
If we look at Derwin James’ two full seasons(removing the two games he played before getting hurt in 2016), Robinson has similar numbers. Robinson has eight more tackles and more interceptions, but James has four more sacks and seven more passes defended. James was a two-time All-ACC First Teamer and First Team Freshman All-American.
Hamsah Nasirildeen is another FSU safety that got drafted in recent years. Nasirildeen was on pace to have ridiculous production before an injury at the end of the 2019 season robbed him of a full final season at FSU. He was All-ACC Second Team in 2019.
Where does Jammie Robinson stack up in this conversation? He’s a two-time All-Conference performer with excellent production.
I think he goes above Nasirildeen and from a production standpoint, is in the same league as Joyner and James. Let me know what you think.
