How Jordan Travis returning in 2023 impacts FSU for years to come
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU football quarterback Jordan Travis announced he will return to FSU for the 2023 season Monday night. It was a move that didn’t surprise many folks but confirmed what everyone thought and hoped.
The move assures FSU’s offense will remain one of the elite offenses nationally as long as everyone stays healthy next season. FSU will likely be a top-10 team to begin the season in 2023 as long as they take care of business in the Cheez-It Bowl against Oklahoma.
His return will likely impact transfer portal recruiting, as FSU looks to sure up a couple of spots on the offensive line and likely tight end. I know everyone is concentrating on the impact of the 2023 season, and rightfully so.
However, Jordan Travis returning sets FSU up for years to come and likely eliminates a problem that has plagued the Noles since the 2017 season. It’s a problem that goes all the way back to Jimbo Fisher missing at the QB position since Jameis Winston and leaving those cabinets bare for his successors.
Mike Norvell has done a good job with QB recruiting since his arrival. Tate Rodemaker signed with FSU 10 days after Mike Norvell got hired in the 2020 recruiting class. Blue-chip QB AJ Duffy signed in the 2022 cycle, and both remain on the roster going into the 2023 season.
Duffy will redshirt this 2022 season, and Rodemaker finally looks serviceable in mop-up duty. Travis returning allows both guys to continue to learn under Mike Norvell and QB Coach Tony Tokarz. We have seen the progression of Jordan Travis in the last year, which only bodes well for future FSU QBs.
FSU has another blue-chip QB committed for the 2023 recruiting class in Brock Glenn. He’ll redshirt next season, and 2024 blue-chip QB Luke Kromenhoek is onboard as a commit. What does all of this mean?
After the 2023 season, FSU will have either Tate Rodemaker in his fifth year in Mike Norvell’s offense or AJ Duffy going into his third year.
Brock Glenn will have a year under his belt should the loser of that QB competition decide to leave, which could allow Luke Kromenhoek the opportunity to redshirt if needed.
In a nutshell, FSU shouldn’t have to worry about running a true freshman QB out there like Jimbo Fisher had to with James Blackman after Deondre Francois got hurt in the 2017 season opener.
Poor QB play has been one of the biggest hindrances to FSU since before Jordan Travis ascended to full-time starter.
Mike Norvell’s track record with developing quarterbacks in his offense is off the charts, and the guys he has at his disposal are more highly touted than anyone he had at previous stops.
The future is bright in Tallahassee for 2023 and beyond.
