No surprise here that this position group leads off this “need to know section.”

This group has had its struggles in recent years, yet somehow they showed quantifiable improvements last year. This was despite not having this spring evaluation period and offseason conditioning.

This improvement was with players who had to rehab injuries from home, who had to be frequently rotated, and who had to deal with multiple quarterback changes throughout the year.

So far, in these first couple of practice days, we have seen some promising things. Darius Washington has finally participated in the offseason strength program after suffering various injuries throughout his time here.

Dontae Lucas, another promising youngster, has finally had the opportunity for his injuries to get fully healthy after it nagged him all season. Now he looks healthy and strong in highlights.

This could also be a big offseason for the 2020 recruiting class. Zane Herring, Lloyd Willis, and Thomas Shrader have received praise from Coach Norvell early on.

“I’m excited about the group and as they continue to grow and get better it has the chance to be a group we can build upon with what we are doing offensively,” said Norvell.

One key thing is Devontae Love-Taylor is still out after having surgery late last season. Bryson Estes (2021 signee) is impressing at guard and looked strong after his Tour of Duty campaign.

Now, this unit got it handed to them on their first day in pads, but watch to see who in this group begins to separate themselves, especially as more reps in pads come. The staff could be getting closer to the eight-man rotation they’d like to have, and that’s without adding any players from the transfer portal.
