FSU football coaches continue to add to its 2021 recruiting class.

FSU football still has major roster needs in its 2021 recruiting class, and they are using the transfer portal to address a number of them.

However, Mike Norvell and staff addressed the runningback position Saturday with Auburn transfer D.J. Williams.

He’s the sixth transfer player to join the 2021 recruiting class, along with quarterback McKenzie Milton, Jarques McClellion, Jermaine Johnson, Keir Thomas, and Andrew Parchment.

Williams announced the news via his Instagram account:

Williams checks in at 5’11” and 210 pounds. He provides immediate depth at the running back position along with Jashaun Corbin and Lawrance Toafili.

The former four-star recruit has three years of eligibility remaining after playing at Auburn the past two years and the 2020 season not counting due to COVID-19.

The addition of Williams gives the Noles another three-headed attack similar to what they had in 2020 with La’Damian Webb, Corbin, and Toafili. Webb has since transferred to Troy to be closer to home.

Williams saw a decreased workload in year two after 84 carries for 400 yards and two touchdowns as a freshman. His sophomore year saw him with 38 carries for 199 yards and three touchdowns.

Williams has pass-catching ability but wasn’t heavily featured at Auburn in the passing attack. He had 12 receptions for 72 yards over in two years.

Thoughts

This move is solid for the coaching staff. It wasn’t a huge need to pick up a running back from the transfer portal, but Williams does have a ton of value with multiple years of eligibility left.

This commitment shows the coaches’ recruiting strategy of gaining experience and players that can play right away from the transfer portal.

He’s the No. 22 player in the 2021 recruiting class with about four spots remaining to fill.
