FSU football will have a talented group of wide receivers in 2020. Could Warren Thompson maximize his potential after two years in the program?

FSU football has one of the best wide receivers in the country in Tamorrion Terry. However, the Noles will need more of its weapons to step up as teams continue to devote more attention in his direction.

One player that could see his role increase is redshirt sophomore, Warren Thompson. He came to the Noles in the 2018 recruiting cycle ranked as the No. 157 player nationally and the No. 28 receiver overall.

Thompson started the 2019 season in promising fashion, catching two passes for 50 yards in the opener against Boise State. However, he never seemed to find his niche and virtually disappeared after the Wake Forest game with six consecutive games of not getting on the field.

He finished the season with six receptions for 91 yards, averaging 15 yards per reception. The 2020 season will be a new start for Thompson.

At 6’3″ and 200 pounds, he has an outstanding blend of size and speed that could help stretch the field and take the pressure off Tamorrion Terry.

Thoughts

The video above is from the spring with Thompson speaking on the progress he’s made and the new staff. It’s obvious he felt like he needed a clean slate after getting off to a rocky start the first two years.

Ability isn’t the issue for Thompson, it’s all the small details he talks about in the video. The ability to focus on how he responds to adversity, his mindset at practice, and learning the playbook.

It helps he has a great relationship with FSU wide receivers coach Ron Dugans. I expect Thompson to be a player that takes a big step up in production this season as long as he can stay healthy. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him with over 25 receptions and 400 yards with five touchdowns.
