FSU football will face a young but hungry defense in its first game against Virginia Tech in 2018.

We’ve discussed FSU football will face a Virginia Tech defense that’s lost a ton on defense to injuries and the NFL.

However, Virginia Tech has one of the best defensive coordinators in the game with Bud Foster and he’ll have his work cut out for him.

Now it seems like he’ll really have his work cut out for him according to Virginia Tech head coach Justin Fuentes.

Fuentes spoke at the ACC Football Kickoff Wednesday and spoke on a variety of things. One of which was all the defensive players they lost and what they were planning to do to accommodate those changes.

Check out what he said below(hokiesports with the transcription):

"“It’s very difficult to keep people from running the ball down your throat if you don’t have enough people in the box,” Fuente said. “Under no circumstances are we going to vacate the box for pass coverage and let people run the ball up and down the field. That’s just not going to happen. So you can’t totally avoid one-on-one situations in the back end.“I feel really good about what we’ve got in terms of we’ve got some young, long, athletic, tough guys that would like to play. They all told me they wanted to play early, so here’s your chance. The challenge is that it’s not good enough just to play at Virginia Tech. You’ve got to play well. Getting those guys to that level is the challenge as coaches.”"

Thoughts

Well, he’s got a point that if you can’t stop the run you’re definitely not going to have a successful defense. The problem is FSU will predominately feature the run with Willie Taggart’s Gulf Coast Offense.

Does that mean they are going to consistently leave experienced defensive backs in man-to-man situations? If so, we could see a lot of what you see in the featured image of this post.

FSU football has a great mixture of size and speed at the receiver positions. The x-factor is the Noles now have two experienced quarterbacks that can get the ball downfield in 2018 with James Blackman and Deondre Francois.

That’s going to change the FSU offense drastically from last season. Bud Foster is one of the best defensive coordinators in the game, but it’ll be interesting to see how much he can try to protect those young players in their first game on a huge stage in primetime.

The Noles are currently a favored by -6.5 points by most betting sites according to SBRodds.com.
