FSU Recruiting: Noles No. 1 class ranking isn’t just fluff
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU recruiting ascending to the No. 1 spot in the nation earlier this week and it’s not just by sheer numbers.
FSU recruiting has been similar to a duck on a smooth pond the past couple of months prior to the spring game Saturday. Everything looked calm and peaceful on the surface, but the coaching staff has been frantically working to get quality blue chip players on campus since February’s junior day.
They had players visiting on the first day of spring camp, regular days during the week and weekends. The mantra no days off was for real and all the hard work came to fruition last with a slew of blue chip commitments.
It all started with four-star quarterback Sam Howell’s commitment that Monday night. However, the avalanche came later in the week when four-star players Dontae Lucas and Jaleel McRae announced their commitments.

FSU recruiting wasn’t done for the day as four-star receiver Maurice Goolsby announced his commitment for the Noles late Saturday night. They also got a commitment for the 2020 class.
FSU recruiting landed another quality player in three-star defensive back Renardo Green to capture the No. 1 class ranking in the nation with 10 commits.
However, unlike Miami who had the No. 1 class briefly due to sheer numbers, the Noles have it based on quality.
Quality Over Quantity
The class consists of 70 percent blue chip players:
- 1 five-star
- 6 four-stars
- 3 three-stars
Wait, there’s more as seven of the players are listed in the 247 Composite Top 300 and it arguably should be eight with Travis Jay being under ranked at the moment.
In fact, Jay is lowest rated recruit(by position) in the class as he’s listed as the No. 39 ranked cornerback in the nation.
There are four of the players ranked top 8 or better at their position and another two ranked top 20.
FSU recruiting has the fourth highest per player ranking (92.30) in the country among all teams ranked in the top 15.

Only Georgia (96.18), Alabama(94.96) and Oklahoma(93.46) have higher per player averages.
