Depth

FSU football is a perfect example of why depth is critical at the quarterback position. Do you remember when Christian Ponder got hurt and couldn’t play in the Gator Bowl (Bobby Bowden’s last game), and a young EJ Manuel lead the ‘Noles to victory over West Virginia?

What about when Ponder got hurt and couldn’t finish the Chic-fil-A Bowl against South Carolina? Manuel came in and led the ‘Noles to victory once again.

On the flip-side, remember when EJ Manuel got hurt against Oklahoma in 2011 and had to miss a few games? A young Clint Trickett was forced into action and the ‘Noles promptly lost three in a row.

Remember how lost FSU was on offense when Sean Maquire got injured in the bowl game last season against Houston? JJ Cosentino hadn’t played any meaningful minutes in his FSU career and it showed.

He was the third quarterback on the roster to see action in 2015.

Full credit can’t be given to Manuel for those wins in which he filled in for Ponder. Full blame can’t be placed on Trickett or Cosentino in those losses.

However, it does lend validity to the thought that a team can never have enough talented quarterbacks on its roster. Injuries are a part of the game, and a player is always one play away from having to go into the game.

Just look at Ohio State in 2014.
