FSU Football: Clemson’s football facilities best in ACC?
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU football is in the middle of renovations to Doak Campbell stadium with the addition of the Champion’s Club. Clemson’s facilities better?
FSU football facilities lagging behind Clemson? ESPN’s Travis Haney says so in a Insider ($) piece. Here’s what he had to say regarding what he considers the best football facilities in the ACC.
"The conference, rooted in its hoops history, lagged in the football facilities arms race. Clemson became the lead program pushing forward, notably with its West Zone club addition in the mid-2000s. That area has already seen additions and upgrades in the past year or two, including a new, high-tech-looking entryway called “the Oculus.” It’s admittedly gaudy for Clemson, people on the staff say, but it says something about how the program is progressing. The Tigers added an indoor facility a couple of seasons back. At least in football, they continue to set the standard that others in the ACC are chasing."
Clemson does have impressive facilities and have done a great job of adding renovations to its complex. In fact, they’ve been doing renovations for the past decade through its “WestZone” project that began with phase I in 2004 and ended with phase II in 2009.
The addition saw new luxury box and club seating along with updated locker rooms, football training and strength conditioning facilities.

Clemson announced a 50 million dollar athletic building plan in 2011 that featured phase III of the “Westzone” project, which included an indoor practice facility, a museum and the Oculus entrance.
FSU football has been upgrading its facilities over the past few years with the addition of its own indoor practice facility in 2013.
The “Champions Campaign” is a 250 million dollar to improve all aspect of FSU sports. About 85 million of that campaign will feature renovations to Doak Campbell Stadium, Champions Hall, House of Champions.
Here are some of the additions:
- A new football players’ residence, the “Champions Hall” apartment complex.
- An upgraded football locker room, coaches’ offices, meeting rooms and players lounge with displays that focus on FSU history and traditions.
- FSU’s indoor practice facility, the Albert J. Dunlap Athletic Training Facility.
- Construction of the “Champions Club,” a club level seating addition in the south end zone of Doak Campbell Stadium. The new seating is expected to be ready for the 2016 season.
- Additional upgrades to Doak Campbell Stadium to be funded by sales to the “Champions Club.”
“I do think it puts us very equal (with other schools),” Fisher said. “Some people may have certain things a little better, but I think we have certain things a little better. I love the way our setup is, and I think it makes us very competitive with anyone in America.”
