Florida State football has been a negative topic in college football over the past two years, besides beating Alabama in the season opener. The Seminoles have had four losing seasons in six years under Coach Norvell. This is not the standard that the legendary Bobby Bowden created.
However, there is always an opportunity to get better with the transfer portal. The Seminoles grabbed 22 prospects during the window period, and the list could grow even larger since Friday, January 16th, was just the deadline to enter the portal for undergraduates, but they didn't have to commit anywhere by that date.
With that said, Florida State's coaching staff has spent so much time, effort, and resources on getting transfers on campus. It hasn't been easy with the fact that the Seminoles only grabbed seven wins in two years. That level of failure comes with overspending for transfers and recruits.
Quarterback transfer DJ Lagway could be on the move again to Duke
Florida State hosted several quarterback prospects on campus during the window that were starting-caliber options, such as UNLV's Anthony Colandrea, Florida's DJ Lagway, and Auburn's Ashton Daniels. This would be the third year in a row that the Seminoles would grab a transfer signal-caller.
Colandrea decided to go to Nebraska, Lagway went to Baylor, and Daniels obviously went to Florida State. When fans saw that Lagway was visiting, some were immediately disgusted because of how his career has panned out so far as a former five-star prospect, plus he didn't seem to fit Gus Malzahn's offense.
When on the visit, Malzahn compared DJ Lagway to Cam Newton, and the quarterback even mentioned that he was on "Cloud 9". When the Cloud 9 quote came out, some individuals expected Florida State to sign him, but he elected to take other visits and ended up committing to Baylor.
This was a good spot for him to be since he was from the Texas area, plus his father (Derek) played at Baylor. However, Lagway only committed to the Bears, so it opened up the idea of him going elsewhere. The Miami Hurricanes have seemingly tampered with Duke quarterback Darian Mensah, and now it looks like he will be going to Coral Gables.
The Blue Devils, who just won the ACC Championship, will now be searching for a quarterback. 247Sports' Matt Zenitz reported that Lagway is one of the potential replacements for Mensah, as he left Duke.
Sources tell me and @chris_hummer that one of the quarterbacks now of interest to Duke as a potential replacement for Darian Mensah is former Florida star QB DJ Lagway, who has been on the verge of heading to Baylor but hasn’t signed yet pic.twitter.com/GUul8Mrbd7

College football is in an unhealthy spot, where it looks like free agency in the NFL. Even though Florida State won't play the Duke Blue Devils in 2026 (unless it is for the conference title game), the Seminoles do have to face the arch-rival Hurricanes, who bought a new shiny toy at quarterback in Darian Mensah that could give the Seminoles headaches.
