FSU softball: Devyn Flaherty has come to life in 14 game winning streak
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU softball (40-10, 18-3 ACC) has won 14 consecutive games and stands atop the ACC standings with one conference series remaining against a Syracuse team near the bottom of the league. This team has experienced many ups and downs in 2024. They got off to a shaky start, and it was understandable. They lost one of the best pitchers in FSU history in Kathyrn Sandercock, had three freshmen playing large roles at the beginning of the season, Kaley Mudge was hurt, and Devyn Flaherty got off to a slow start. Not to mention, Coach Lonni Alameda always plays a tough schedule to prepare for the postseason. The pitching between Makenna Reid and freshman Ashtyn Danley was the biggest issue early on, but I knew FSU would need Devyn Flaherty to heat up offensively if they wanted to ascend to top-tier levels. Here's what I tweeted in March:
The April 2nd tweet was a few days before FSU began their 14-game winning streak. In a little over a month, Flaherty raised her batting average from .207 to .327, and 15 of her 35 hits this season have come since April 6th. Devyn Flaherty appeared in 13 of the last 14 games(she didn't play in one game against McNeese State). She is 15 for 33 (.454), with 15 runs scored, three stolen bases, and four RBI in her last 13 games. Flaherty has always been one of the catalysts behind FSU's offense, with her ability to get on base and cause chaos. Her on-base percentage is .455 and a single for Flaherty is nearly an automatic double because she steals bases so well. She rarely strikes out and is a tough out when she's on. She only has a few games in her FSU uniform, but it's great to see her coming on strong as this team prepares for the postseason. A productive Devyn Flaherty at the plate helps make this FSU offense even more potent. Kudos to her for staying with it and turning things around offensively over the past month. The Noles will host the rival Florida Gators Wednesday night, lookin to win their seventh straight against the Gators.
