FSU football: Offense atrocious in first half against Memphis
By Kelvin Hunt
How bad was the FSU offense in the first half against Memphis? FSU turned the ball over on the second play of the game resulting in an eventual field goal for the Memphis Tigers. The Noles turned it over again on an interception by DJ Uiagalelei, resulting in an eventual touchdown and a 10-0 lead. FSU had 67 total yards and was 1-7 on third downs. FSU receivers had multiple drops, and the offensive line was terrible, blocking an undersized Memphis defensive line. FSU couldn't run the ball. They only had 36 rushing yards on 12 attempts. DJ Uiagalelei was 7-14 for 31 passing yards, averaging 2.2 yards per pass. FSU turned the ball over on special teams when an FSU player bumped into the returner, and the ball bounced off them. It was a catastrophe of epic proportions, and FSU was lucky only to be down 13-3.
The offensive plays Mike Norvell called were terrible, throwing horizontal passes that never went for much. Why continue to call plays that require the receivers to block when they can never execute the blocks? Why not run DJ Uiagalelei more to create a numbers advantage?
The FSU defense isn't playing great, but it is the only thing keeping FSU in the game. The Memphis offense only averaged 3.95 yards per play. A 54-yard field goal from Ryan Fitzgerald was the only offensive score for FSU. It's amazing that Memphis is +3 in turnover margin and only winning by 10 points. The FSU offense has to make a change somehow. It's not all on DJ Uiagalelei, but the offense isn't playing hard for him. Is it time for Brock Glen?
