FSU football: Former DB Omarion Cooper plans to rejoin FSU team from portal
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU football hasn't done much in the transfer portal post-2024 spring, aside from losing a few players like Joshua Burrell, Vandrevius Jacobs, and Greedy Vance. FSU coaches did an excellent job in the winter transfer portal window, with 10+ players enrolling and going through spring camp. It's one of the major reasons FSU hasn't been too pressed to add players from the portal. It's more wants than needs, plus they need a few players to enter the portal to help get under the 85 scholarship limit. A familiar face plans to rejoin the team according to his social media page Tuesday afternoon. Former defensive back Omarion Cooper announced his commitment to the Noles after spending one year at Colorado.
Cooper began his career at FSU as a four-star HS recruit who earned playing time as a freshman. However, injuries derailed his sophomore season, and he moved to safety before entering the transfer portal after the 2022 season. Cooper played at Colorado last year, totaling 37 tackles and five pass deflections.
It's not clear if Cooper will be on scholarship since FSU needs guys to enter the transfer portal to clear some spots. He could walk on in the NIL era since the coaching staff, and he is familiar with one another. Cooper would provide solid depth at the safety position, especially if he's 100 percent healthy. The safety position is an area that only returns one starter from last season, Shyheim Brown. Cooper is the second player (DJ Lundy) to enter the transfer portal and commit or play at Colorado before re-joining the program from the portal. FSU could add 1-2 more players before the summer, but it'll be interesting to see who ultimately enters the program to free up some spots. When FSU fans didn't think the coaches would make a move, boom, there it is.
