FSU football: 3 major things defense can't afford against Boston College
By Kelvin Hunt
DE Running Themselves Out Of Plays
I'll use the same play to highlight something Castellanos took advantage of in last year's game. FSU defensive ends would take themselves out of plays by rushing too wide and winding up behind the QB, allowing them to step up into rushing lanes created by the wide angle.
In the clip below, it's Jared Verse at the top of the screen. Look at where he ends up and where the QB could have run if he wanted to. Verse was usually great at keeping the edge and not overpursuing around the edge. Patrick Payton does a decent job at the bottom of the line of scrimmage, but it's something Castellanos killed FSU on last year. He's not a great passer and will drop back like it's a pass, but it's a delayed draw, baiting defensive ends to rush like it's a pass so he can step up and run. The other thing I dislike is spying on the QB here. Tatum Bethune is spying and isn't fast enough to make the tackle. Blake Nichelson is likely fast enough, but many times there's traffic in the area impeding pursuit angles that make spying ineffective.
