FSU baseball: Dartmouth catcher Nathan Cmeyla's commitment impact to Noles
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU baseball continues to turn over every rock and look behind every tree for available talent at any level. The Noles have added several JUCO players and others from the transfer portal. They added their sixth portal commitment Wednesday evening from Dartmouth catcher Nathan Cmeyla. The Virginia native had his best season at Dartmouth this past season, where he led the team with a .350 batting average in 143 at-bats. He hit seven home runs and had 30 RBI while starting 37 of 39 games. He had 10 walks and 17 strikeouts, 12 doubles, and a triple. His on-base percentage was .403. He's a career .318 hitter in three college seasons and lists at 5'10" and 190 pounds.
Can Cmeyla make an impact?
The immediate question is, can Cmeyla transition to the increased competition levels? He has had some success against some ACC schools. He hit 100 points higher than Jaxson West this past season, hit for more power, better on-base percentage, and struck out fewer times. However, he's not a defensive wizard behind the plate, with nine errors last season. He only throws out about 13 percent of would-be base stealers. I think the staff projects he could take another leap offensively with another year of development.
The first footage below is over two years old, and he stays back nicely on the pitch away to drive it over the wall opposite field.
He takes advantage of a mistake in the zone on an 0-2 pitch from the Miami pitcher for a double down the line. He fits the mold of guys making contact, putting the ball in play, and making things happen, which is a common theme for most of the offensive bats taken from the portal and JUCO ranks thus far. He might develop into a guy who can hit 10-15 home runs next year.
