Florida State's performance at the quarterback position, involving transfer portal players, has been inconsistent over the past two years. DJ Uiagalelei was a bad miss, and Thomas Castellanos was what we thought he was.

Castellanos joined the team during the Winter Transfer Portal window last year, but wasn’t the only transfer quarterback the coaching staff selected. They added Jaylen King, who played at East Tennessee State, in the Spring Transfer Portal window.

He came to FSU knowing he wouldn’t play and would take a redshirt. King appeared in one game in a blowout win against Kent State, but will now enter the transfer portal once again.

The addition never made sense to start with. FSU had Kevin Sperry enrolled in the spring and Brock Glenn and Castellanos on the roster. At the time, I wrote how he could help with depth at practice or potentially be an extra running back since his running ability was the best thing about him as a quarterback.

I can understand taking an offensive lineman from the transfer portal who may need to develop. However, a player like King, who has no shot to ever contribute, is a poor decision. We can add this to the series of bad decisions made by Mike Norvell and Derrick Yray regarding the transfer portal. The good news is, Yray has left for UCLA, and Mike Norvell is probably in his last year at FSU.

The spring transfer portal window is no more and will open on January 2nd. How FSU goes about acquiring players in the portal will tell you all you need to know about 2026.
