Nebraska linebacker transfer Stefon Thompson is currently on a visit at Florida State
Florida State football hired defensive coordinator Tony White, defensive line coach Terrance Knighton, and safeties coach Evan Cooper, who were all previously at Nebraska. As a result, the Seminoles had many Nebraska players interested in at least visiting Florida State.
One interesting prospect to monitor is Nebraska senior linebacker transfer Stefon Thompson. Thompson started his visit with the Seminoles on Friday.
The veteran accumulated 172 total tackles (21 for loss) and 10.5 sacks during his four years with Syracuse from 2020-2023. Then he transferred over to Nebraska and recorded 27 total tackles, two passes defended, and a fumble recovery.
Interestingly, Florida State also hosted Thompson on a visit in January 2024 before he decided to commit to Nebraska. It didn't look like both sides were interested enough to get the linebacker to come to the Seminoles.
Florida State is losing linebackers such as DJ Lundy (potential graduation- if he doesn't return), Cam Riley (graduation), and Demarco Ward (transfer portal). The Seminoles had a scare with redshirt sophomore Omar Graham Jr. entering the transfer portal. However, Graham Jr. decided to withdraw his name and return to Florida State.
The thought process is that Omar Graham Jr., Blake Nichelson, and Justin Cryer will be three linebackers with significant snaps in Tony White's 3-3-5 defensive scheme. I like Graham Jr., Nichelson, and Cryer, but they don't have a ton of experience, which scares me.
This is why I think adding Stefon Thompson would be worth it. He is a veteran linebacker who played in White's system last year. At the very least, he can provide depth at a position that leaves a ton to be desired.
