Florida State softball has already moved on from Isa Torres, announcing she’ll finish her college career back home with the Texas Longhorns. Florida State has dipped into the transfer portal twice, looking to replace the production lost with the departures of Torres and Jaysoni Beachum. They’ve actually done a solid job with the two acquisitions they’ve landed so far.
However, I wanted to revisit a post I wrote after the news broke that Torres would be heading to Texas. The article was about Torres's transfer to Texas, sending a clear message to Florida State. Some people took that as Florida State wasn’t willing to pay her what Texas was, and while that may have been true. The real message was that Torres didn’t believe she could realistically win a national title at Florida State.
After all, she had been at FSU for three years, and they never made it past Super Regionals. I found it ironic that Joe Torres, Isa’s father, confirmed that sentiment in an interview with Horns247:
"At the end of the day, I think it's Texas' culture," Joe Torres, Isa's father, told Horns247 on Wednesday of his daughter signing with Texas. "I think she wanted something close to home, but I think them having a winning culture and having standards and everything else that Texas stands for - the tradition there, the Texas network - I think that's what really brought her home."
Florida State has a great winning culture under Lonni Alameda, but they haven’t won on the big stage in nearly a decade (2018) and haven’t made it to the Women’s College World Series since losing against Oklahoma in 2023, the year before Isa Torres arrived in Tallahassee.
FSU made the Super Regionals in 2024 and 2025, before losing in the Tallahassee Regional as heavy favorites a month ago. If FSU retained Torres and Beachum, there was no guarantee they would even make the Women’s College World Series for the first time. There are no guarantees with Texas, but the Longhorns are back-to-back defending national champions, and that’s hard to ignore.
I believe Joe Torres and Isa love and respect Coach Lonni Alameda. Torres wrote this last month on social media:
Grateful for her and everything she’s done for my kid…winning and leading starts at the top and I can’t thank god enough for allowing our family to be part of your tribe

Isa Torres didn't think she could win a national title at Florida State
This tweet from Isa Torres's father is very interesting for the fan base to discuss.
Only thing left is a trip to OKC‼️‼️ https://t.co/jYAM8vDWa6

That tells it all, along with his comments about winning culture and standards. Texas is putting resources into its softball program to compete and win national titles. They’ve beaten Texas Tech in back-to-back years for those titles, and the Red Raiders have spent more than anyone poaching the best players from other teams.
I understand the move, but nobody will remember who won that title in a few years. However, had she finished what she started in Tallahassee, she would have gone down as a Tallahassee legend. She’ll always be remembered for how well she played in those three years, but it won’t hold the same weight with FSU fans now that she’s gone.
In the end, they made a decision they felt was best for Isa Torres and her family. She probably got paid a pretty penny, which didn't hurt. Lonni Alameda has a chance to prove them wrong in 2027, and we won't be rooting for Torres along the way.
