FSU takes coaches and Nebraska fans realize their brand isn't what they thought
By Kelvin Hunt
It's funny to watch things come full circle without even trying. I recently had a friendly debate on social media with Nebraska fans. FSU has a top tight end committed, Chase Loftin, who's from Nebraska, and a Nebraska fan sent a message to him implying Nebraska was on the way up and FSU wasn't going to be good any time soon. I replied that FSU won two national and conference titles since Nebraska was last relevant.
Fast forward a week later and the news broke that FSU will hire the Nebraska defensive coordinator for the same job at FSU, and may bring his defensive line coach with him. Nebraska fans are in disbelief at how it could happen for some reason.
Is it a question? FSU has better weather, no state income tax, and most importantly, access to an abundance of blue-chip players that Nebraska has no shot to land. Did I mention White will likely make more money?
White has had top 20 defenses at Nebraska with average players, but he could field monster defenses at FSU and parlay that into a top head coaching job in three years or less. Just look at what Mark Stoops did after coming to Tallahassee in 2010 when FSU had a historically bad defense in 2009. He was a head coach at Kentucky in 2013.
FSU has shown its a program that can turn things around quickly no matter the coach. It was elite under Bobby Bowden and Jimbo Fisher, and Mike Norvell turned things around quickly after inheriting a mess and two tough seasons. Norvell created the mess he's in, but it's not impossible to right the ship.
Nebraska fans must realize their days of competing for national championships are over. The college football landscape has changed drastically since they were neck-and-neck with FSU in the 90's. Most of the top talent resides in the southeast and California. None of those players are interested in going to Nebraska nowadays, and the surrounding area doesn't produce enough talent for Nebraska to be elite again. Sorry guys!
