One of my biggest concerns for the FSU football program going into the season was depth at some key positions. I noted that I felt confident that FSU could compete with anyone on the schedule with its starters, but it was the potential drop-off that could come once some reserves take the field that had me concerned.
Reserves Kevin Wynn and Lawayne McCoy began the season on the injured list, but they should start working their way back over the next couple of weeks.
One of the biggest tasks was escaping the Alabama game relatively healthy. The only injury was to Randy Pittman Jr. at tight end, but that seems to be more of a load management case. I expect he’ll be back by the Miami game at the latest.
FSU suffered a couple of documented injuries in the East Texas A&M game on Saturday. Squirrel White left the game after fielding a punt and was seen on the sideline with a brace on his arm. It looked like some sort of injury to his left hand while on the field. James Williams got banged up during the game, and it looked like some type of hip or leg injury.
FSU head coach Mike Norvell stated he didn’t think either injury would be anything long-term in the post-game press conference. Here’s the good news. FSU has a bye week coming up and will play lowly Kent State the following week. They won’t need any of these players for that game, which gives them two weeks to continue healing.
FSU will travel to Virginia for a game on September 26th. That’s nearly three weeks from now. Virginia is improved, but I’m not sure they’ll need these guys for that game.
The game to circle is the Miami game on October 4th. That gives all of these players nearly a month to get right. FSU is healthy on the offensive line and most of the other key positions, which is about as good as one could hope for at this point in the season.
