Florida State softball improved its roster despite losing two of its best players

FSU still may not be done in the transfer portal either.

Florida State softball will look quite a bit different in 2027, as two of its best players have departed the program via the transfer portal. Isa Torres decided to go back to her home state in Texas, and Jaysoni Beachum has visited several teams without making a decision on where she’ll play next.

Make no mistake, those two players made up the best left side of any infield in college softball between their offense and defense. However, they couldn’t elevate their games when it mattered most, often disappearing in the postseason. That’s been a huge conversation among Florida State fans since they left. FSU lost two other non-contributors via the transfer portal and added two players in Stetson’s Nicole Edmiaston and Tennessee’s Ella Dodge.

FSU could add two more players and is in conversations to add at least one, with Oklahoma’s Tia Milloy as the main target. Milloy would be another solid get, and FSU has one of the top freshman classes coming in the fall.

As it stands right now, has Florida State’s roster gotten better since the season ended? Yes, they lost two of their best players, but added two players with some excellent production in their own right.

Nicole Edmiaston and Ella Dodge combined to hit more home runs (34) than Torres and Beachum (26). However, the former FSU duo combined to score more runs, had more RBI, and a higher on-base percentage.  Defensively, it’s probably a wash, as Edmiaston will likely play first base and Dodge will either play second or third base.

Would Isa Torres replicate or improve on her junior season had she remained at Florida State? Probably not, but the real question would be whether she was going to be a factor consistently against the good teams. The same goes for Beachum.

There’s a question of whether Edmiaston will excel with the level of competition in the ACC from the mid-major play Stetson experiences. We could see Ella Dodge’s numbers move from the SEC.

If Florida State can add Milloy to the fold and she plays up to her potential? That could push Florida State over the edge in terms of whether they improved the roster overall. Milloy didn’t get many opportunities at Oklahoma, but she has power potential that FSU desperately needs.

I’ve been clamoring for Florida State to add a power pitcher from the transfer portal, but it doesn’t look like there’s anyone available who would fill that position. Maybe one of the incoming freshmen throws gas and can help fill that role, or Bella Dimitrijevic takes the next step in her development from her freshman to sophomore season.

I expect Florida State to compete in the ACC like they always do under Lonni Alameda, but lately it’s been: How far will they go in the postseason? They never got past Super Regionals with Isa Torres and Jaysoni Beachum leading the way. Maybe this new blood from the transfer portal, the incoming freshman class, and the development of players on the roster is enough to get them there in 2027.
