Organizational commitment to the Florida State football
As we head into summer camps and gear up for the opener against New Mexico State, a fundamental question must be answered. Does the chicken come before the egg? Mike Norvell is front and center in a lot of hot-seat discussions. Is he a lame duck coach that will survive the season?
Even if he is, questions should arise about the underlying obstacles. He has done himself no favors with decision-making, play-calling, or a lack of culture at times. These individual shortcomings point toward a potentially deeper issue. Where is the investment in the betterment of the football program?
On3's Pete Nakos sounds off on Florida State's NIL budget
Florida State has obviously invested money in the program through the Doak Campbell renovations, but is that an antiquated way of looking at things? Pete Nakos’ recent appearance on WarchantTV was very telling.
When comparing how FSU’s NIL budget ranks amongst its peers, Nakos noted that the investment in Tallahassee is less than Louisville's but comparable to what Virginia and NC State spend. This invokes the original question. Are funds being stashed until Norvell coaches himself out the door, or could more be done to bring in higher-ranked recruits/transfers?
One example that could be relevant to Florida State
Look at the hoops Colorado has jumped through for “Coach Prime,” for example. According to USA Today, for example, Colorado reviewed and changed their transfer credit policy, which increased the talent pool to bolster the team. If it is all about winning, what is stopping schools from just investing in the first place?
If the results do not pan out, it is still an opportunity to display an established commitment to future coaching prospects. With Mike Norvell, it seems the damage is done, and the next coach (who will more than likely have a name in the sport) will get the wheels turning and FSU back into the positive spotlight.
Year over year, the price of the brick goes up, so from that vantage point, Norvell should already be gone.
The Final Spear
Florida State does not rank at the bottom of spending, but even in the middle of the pack, it is producing fewer results than the program should settle for. While I am sure the school could attract a major player, can it reach the top tier of head coaches?
Time will tell, but one thing is for sure. Whenever the time comes for Mike Norvell to go, it will be all about the money. Spend now, profit later, or continue to suffer until the buyout reaches a certain number?
